These are concept sketches for the layout of this very website. In conclusion to the project I found wordpress.com to be a very resourceful tool. The functions are very self explanatory and easy to use. I enjoyed working on this project due to the organization aspect. Overall I learned a lot this semester from this class. Coming in I hardly knew anything about adobe programs and websites and know I feel like I have a strong understanding of both interfaces.

Postcard Project Wrap-up

The postcard project for me was a huge learning experience for me. I never used Illustrator until this project. For my postcards I decided to go the promotional route. I am a leader for TCX, a conference in December and I thought it would be a good idea to use that as my theme. My set is split in to as far as themes. The first two are silhouettes and the second pair are scenic based. TCX is a 4 day conference in the twin cities where students from campuses across the Midwest gather to praise the lord and take time focusing on God. I am looking forward to the conference myself and I hope these cards will intrigue students to consider joining the festivities. The students can use the cards to raise support money and get in touch with old friends and relatives. Basic Concepts and Tools
Vector illustration or object orientated software utilizes a different approach, it is geometry based rather than pixel based, images are made up of geometric descriptions of points, lines and shapes and their relative positions, rather than a large collection of pixels.

Path, stroke, and fill,
Open paths have endpoints that are not connected
Closed paths begin and end at the same point and describe a shape.
The stroke is the linear portion of the path and its characteristics.
Fill is applied to the open area inside a closed path. A fill can appear to stand alone without an apparent outline.

The direction selection tool is designed specifically for selecting parts of a path and individual anchor points.

Illustration software is ideal for handling type. Type can be rescaled, skewed, and rotated easily.

By converting type to outlines, the forms of individual letters can be modified, this converts the type of shapes, which means one loses the ability to edit them as type.

Drawing with the pen is the essence of vector graphics, but also its most challenging skill to master. Clicking down and placing one endpoint, moving the mouse, and then clicking down again will create a simple straight line. The direction in which you drag will determine two things, if the curve will be upward or downward and the angle of its slope.

Smooth points are for drawing continuous curves, as in rolling hills.

Corner points are where the direction of a curve changes, waves

Patterns and Gradients
Gradient mesh is made by smoothly combining multicolored gradients that allow you to create a 3-D look for your forms.

Layers and Stacking
With layers and stacking you can rearrange the position of the layer itself by clicking and dragging it to a new position in the layer menu. The most valuable attribute of layers is their independence.

Combining Forms to Make Complex Shapes
One special feature in vector illustration programs is their ability to make a compound path. A whole new object can be made from a group of closed paths in a variety of ways. They can be united and become one from sharing the same overall outline.

Merge will combine only the overlapping shapes that share the same fill color.
Crop removes any parts below the top shape.
Punch or minus front cuts away the topmost shape from the group.
The command divide increases the number of sections by splitting the shapes into smaller ones wherever they overlap.

Hello my name is Alek Eglinton. In my third year at UW-Stout I am currently focused on industrial design. I love to draw and build. UW-Stout is a great place for me to reach my full potential as a student. My favorite part of art and design is rendering drawings. Industrial design requires lots of drawing and rendering so ID is a great fit for me. I’m looking forward to having a great year.
